Fashion Glossary

Achkan: A coat with long sleeves that reaches below knees and is buttoned in front.

Bandhani: Also, known as bandhej it is a fabric that is prepared using tie and dye process.

Bangles: An Indian ornament worn in wrists. Considered as auspicious it is generally made of glass.

Bazu band: A kind of bracelet worn on the upper part of arm.

Bindi/Kumkum: An accessory that is worn on fore-head. It comes in different shapes and sizes

Booti/Buti: Another form of embroidery that has basic floral formulation.

Choli: Worn with lehanga , sarees or ghagra it is a short blouse.

Chunri: iIts like a long scarf that can be worn by both men and women over different dresses like suits, achkans etc. Lately it was also in fashion to wear chunri with jeans and trousers.

Churidar: A churidar styling can be for “pyjamis” worn both by men and women. A churidar styling is like a lot of folds nearing the end making the look a lot more appealing. It can be both for pyjamis and even suit shirts/ kameez. In suits the sleeves of the kameez are designed in churidar manner.

Desi: Any thing that describes the true essence of ethnic and old India.

Dhoti: A traditional dress that is worn in almost every part of India. Very famous in north India it’s a part of traditional Punjabi dress “Dhoti Kurta”. It’s basically an unstitched cloth draped in a fine manner.

Dupatta: An unstitched cloth that is worn just like chunri by both men and women. Dupatta is the name given to chunri in basic essence of north Indian dressing styles. Another name for dupatta can be chunni.

Dori: A small lace that is generally has ghungroos attached to one end.

Ghagra: A long cloth worn by women with cholis /blouses. It is truly a heavy piece of heavy embroidery. Generally, worn on very special occasions it is one traditional form of dressing style of India.

Ghungroos: These are small bells that can be attached to any thing ranging from dupatta to kurtis. Basically used to give a very appealing look it is being lately used for almost every thing like shoes, bags, dupattas etc.

Gota: It is like a small silver or golden colored lace attached around any dress material basically a look enhancing stuff.

Jhumka: Another form of Indian jewellery that has a very heavy work of art. Worn as an earring it is generally worn on special occasions.

Kada: Generally a thick round piece of metal it’s a kind of bangle that can be worn both by men and women on wrists.

Kali: A kind of small embroidery pattern of floral image.

Kairi Buti: A type of traditional design in the shape of a mango generally used as an embroidery pattern.

Kameez: It is a stiched form of cloth that is worn by women with pyjamis and salwars. It is like a tunic of varied length.

Kundan: A repeated heating of gold makes it more pure and strong the jewelry made of this gold is called Kundan Jewelry.

Kumkum: Its quite similar to bindi but is generally a round dot made with red colored powder.

Kurta: A kind of long shirt meant for easy wear. It can be worn both by men and women.

Kurti: it is like a small length kurta generally worn by women with pants and trousers.

Kaleeren: A hanging form of jewelry worn by Indian bride. Worn of the wrists it has a special meaning for the newly wedded girls.

Lacha: A long skirt that extends to the anklet in length. It is worn in combination with cholis/blouses and scarfs or dupattas.

Libas: Any traditional Indian clothing is generally referred to “Libas”.

Lehenga Lehnga / Lehanga / Lengha: A Long skirt that has very heavy form of embroidery and is worn on very special occasions.

Lungi: Another traditional form of dressing, it is an unstitched piece of cloth that is worn generally by men with shirts or kurtas.

Maang Tika: Another very traditional form of Indian accessories. Generally worn by married women it symbolizes marital status of women. It is a combination of a long chain with a pendant at one end and hook at the other. Worn close to the hair line it symbolizes the true Indian beauty.

Moti: A perl

Mangal sutra: A very important Indian accessory meant for married women it symbolizes respect for the husband. Made in gold it has black beads.

Nathani: A kind of nose ring.

Pajama: A form of a loose pant with very easy style of dressing. It is worn by Indian men along with a kurta or a shirt.

Payal: Also known as pajeb/pazeb it has ghungroos attached to one end. Spelling the sound of Indian beauty pajeb is a must for a “complete” Indian wear.

Phulkari: A kind of heavy Indian embroidery style made using threads.

Pagri: Worn by men on special occasions like marriages it symbolizes dignified nature of Indian men.

Ponchoo: A sort of triangular piece of cloth worn with pants or any dress for a graceful manner of dressing.

Odhini: Just another name for chunri, dupatta.

Salwar Salwaar/Shalwar/Salvar: Generally worn with kameez it is a women’s wear. Its various stitching styles include afghani salwar, patiala salwar etc.

Sharara: A kind of a full length divided skirt with heavy embroidery on it. Basically, a special occasion wear it is generally worn in Muslim weddings with fervor.

Sherwani: Kind of a long tunic with moderate form of embroidery on it. Generally, it is worn by men on special occasions like marriages.

Sitare: Small form of starry pieces of metals that add grace to the dress material.

Tikka: Another name given to maang tika.

Vastra: Traditional Indian clothes are also referred by the name “vastra”.

Zardozi: A thick and very heavy embroidery done with hands using silver or gold wires.. A very laborious activity it is one costly form of Indian embroideries.

Zari: The metallic silver and golden wires used in the zardosi embroidery is called Zari.
